One Astronomical Unit is the mean distance between the Sun and
the Earth. Since the Earth is unequally far from the sun at different times of the year, thanks to the elliptical orbit, the mean of these distances is taken as 1 Astronomical Unit. It is equal to 149,597,871
km, but is expressed as a single unit. Astronomical Units are denoted by AU (uppercase)
and are universally used for measuring celestial distances.
